This jinyeong (memorial portrait) pays homage to Buddhist priest Sangwoldang Saebong (1687-1767), a renowned sutra scholar and restorer of Seonam Temple in South Jeolla Province. Writing on the back of the work identifies the artist as Priest Songgye Hyeonjun, a disciple of Sangwoldang; he completed the painting in 1742 and penned an inscription praising his master in the top-left corner. The tradition of jinyeong can be traced back to the Unified Silla period (668-935).⠀
