Ali, the fourth caliph, slayed the monster and turned it to stone, but not before its fiery breath rendered the land infertile. 50-year-old Ramazan, the fortune teller of Dragon Valley, spends his days perched on the spine of the petrified beast and gazes into the future. It’s a rare and peaceful slice of a troubled country, but when a family from Kabul calls with a request, the echoes of war eclipse the cloudless September sky. They’re afraid to attend a wedding after a spate of suicide bombings in the capital—can Ramazan see their fate? He clutches his prayer beads and squeezes his eyes shut. This year marked a record high for civilian deaths in Afghanistan. Here, daily life is plagued by an insidious violence—unpredictable, indiscriminate, irrevocable. An explosion at the airport. Suicide bombing at the gym. A high school. A shopping center. A wedding. Safe spaces shrink into oblivion; the future cleaves to shreds; the only certainty is this moment. Ramazan’s eyes flutter open, and he tells the family to stay home.
