Eric, an 8 year old eastern black rhino is translocated 10,000 miles, across 5 countries over 68 hours, from the San Diego Safari Park @sdzsafaripark in California to the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania. He is part of a project to increase the population of critically endangered black rhino within the greater Serengeti ecosystem. There are less than 750 Eastern Black Rhinos left in the wild. Eric was moved because his genetics are overrepresented in captive rhinos in the US but will be an important boost to the existing rhinos in the Serengeti ecosystem and east Africa
The project is run by the Singita Grumeti Fund @grumetifund, a non-profit in the western Serengeti, which is working with the Tanzanian government to conserve wildlife and to boost the local population of black rhino in their native habitat. Eric joins a female eastern black rhino already living at Singita Grumeti. Their introduction to each other and hopeful breeding success forms the first phase of this exciting new black rhino expansion project.
