Kyoto prefecture, Miyama Kayabuki-no-Sato.

Miyama village is famous for its characteristic thatch woven roofs - Kayabuki no Yane (kayabuki roof). For this reason the village is also known as Kayabuki-no-Sato ("Kayabuki" roof village). The craft of making such roof is increadibly labor intensive, requiring years of careful patient hadicraft. Such craft is closely related to the local area, where throughout ages dwellers were interacting with mountain forests. In geographical terms such intimate relationship is known in Japanese as "Satoyama"(Sato - village, Yama - mountain). Only a few people who master and practice such art remain in Japan, putting it on the brink of extinction. The problem is even more emphasised by the widespread issue of depopulation in Japanese countryside. This is yet another example of some amazing traditional craft fading away with aging population.
Nevertheless, Miyama Kayabuki-no-Sato village is pretty much well-off, benefiting from the eco-tourism that has become possible thanks to the destingusihed local crafts. In contrast, just a short 15km ride deeper in the country would reveal a village where the "youngest" dweller is aged 75.
