Landscape view from the mountaintop over Showa village.
The village is known as the last place where ancient traditional Japanese craft of weaving from material called "karamushi" is still preserved. For this reason Showa village is also known by the name "Karamushi-ori-no-Sato" which literally means "Karamushi weaving village". Karmushi fabric is made out of nettle that grows around the area, between the mountain forest and human dwellings, which is called Satoyama ("Sato" stands for the "village" and "yama" for "mountain"). Sadly, Showa village is yet another village facing aging and depopulation problems of contemporary Japan. Thats why local NGO is active in the area organizing volunteering activities to raise domestic and international awareness on these problems. I was one of these volunteers in 2011. Unpredictably, this experience has changed my life forever, as eventually I have moved to Japan where I am doing research on sustainability matters in Kyoto University.
