Photo by @Joel Sartore | Meet Buddy, a 31 year old Magellanic penguin at the @cincinnatizoo-- he has exceeded the average lifespan for this species which is typically 15-20 years! Buddy is described as the zoo’s “professional penguin.”-- he’s comfortable in any situation and a staff favorite. Buddy is relied upon for any tv appearances, VIP meet and greets, and zoo events because of his fun, calm, and comfortable personality. This species wears the typical black and white tuxedo pattern, which is an adaptation called countershading. The coloring makes them masters of disguise-- their white belly blends with the sunlight above, making them less visible to prey and their black back blends with the dark sea below, protecting them from predators swimming above. Sadly, this species is classified as near threatened by IUCN, the main challenges they face are oil pollution, fisheries interactions, and climate change. The Cincinnati Zoo is proud to partner with Polar Bears International as an Arctic Ambassador Center to help spearhead community efforts to reduce carbon dioxide and to educate visitors about global warming and wildlife conservation.
