Image by @beverlyjoubert. The Makgadikgadi salt pans in Botswana form a harsh, blindingly white and inhospitable environment where the sun beats down onto salt-encrusted earth. Only the toughest animal species pass through here in the dry summer months. But when the rains come, the dust is settled, the sky is mirrored in the shallow pans, nutrient-rich grass grows around the edges and zebras appear in vast numbers. This is an ancient migration from the Okavango and one that was thought to be lost following the erection of wildlife fences in the 1960s to keep wildlife and livestock separate. In 2006 the Nxai Pan fence was removed. It had previously completely blocked access to the pans along these migratory routes and zebras and wildebeest hadn't been able to follow the rains to renewed grazing grounds. Remarkably, despite numerous generations unable to migrate, the removal of the fence immediately resulted in the zebra descendants following those same paths once again. As human activity has interrupted numerous migrations across the world, it is important to know that if we remove barriers, it is possible that these ancient routes will revive and animals will connect important ecosystems seasonally once again. #botswanamigration #zebramigration #makgadikgadi #ancientpaths #aerial #migration
