Photo by @CarltonWard | The Suwannee River spreads out like a tree into the Gulf of Mexico near Cedar Key, Florida. Meandering 240 miles from its headwaters in Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp to its delta in Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, the Suwannee River forms an important branch to the statewide Florida Wildlife Corridor, which we documented during two National Geographic supported expeditions. Numerous springs feed the Suwannee along its course and the river provides critical freshwater to Gulf estuaries, where nationally significant clam and oyster aquaculture relies on abundant clean water as much as threatened wildlife like sturgeon and manatees. I shot this photo from a small airplane and appreciate the sense of interconnection between land and water which the Suwannee itself represents.
