In Afghanistan women do not typically play sports, and it is culturally considered shameful for women to participate in outdoor activities, like rock and mountain climbing. However, since 2015 a team of female mountaineers have been defying their cultural boundaries, challenging the gender stereotypes of Afghan society. Often, when they climb, local boys will throw stones at them in protest, while many of them have been threatened by their own family members for participating in the sport.
My film-partner, Theresa Breuer, and I are filming this team of Afghan mountaineers for our upcoming feature length documentary, AN UPHILL BATTLE.
