Photo by @nickcobbing | When the captain said “we’re going to the ice bridge” I didn’t understand what he meant. He explained that the ‘bridge’ was where the sea ice formed a plug between two land masses, preventing the flow of ice south. So we sat there for a while with Canada just to our left and Greenland to our right and our bow pointing towards the North Pole, marvelling at the scale and wonder of it all.

Later the captain said we should retreat because this ‘bridge’ of ice would likely break up, sending pieces of ice down the channel behind us (The Nares Strait). Sea ice breaking up seasonally is normal, but what’s changed with the decades is that sea ice is thinning and receding because of a warming ocean and atmosphere.
