Aujourd’hui, intéressons-nous au portrait de Ferdinand Guillemardet, ambassadeur de France en Espagne entre 1798 et 1800, magistralement peint par Goya en 1798.

L'ambassadeur est assis dans une attitude décontractée, il incarne une jeune République qui se veut puissante et sûre d'elle-même. Les couleurs de la France s'affirment avec ostentation dans l'écharpe nouée autour de sa taille ainsi que sur la cocarde et le plumet de son chapeau bicorne. La nappe en soie jaune brochée or et le tissu du fauteuil permettent au peintre de mettre particulièrement en valeurs ces éléments tricolores. En effet, pour Goya, ces accessoires opulents sont les véritables modèles du tableau.

Today, let’s take a look at the portrait of Ferdinand Guillemardet, France's ambassador to Spain from 1798 to 1800. It was masterfully painted by Goya in 1798.

The ambassador is sitting in a relaxed pose, he embodies the self-confidence of the young republic. The colors of France conspicuously stand out on the scarf tied around his waist as well as the cockade and plume on his cocked hat. The yellow silk tablecloth brocaded with gold and the fabric of the armchair are used by the painter to highlight these tricolor accessories. Indeed, for Goya, these opulent accessories are the genuine models of the painting.
