?? Nous vous présentons aujourd’hui « Satyre et bacchante », une œuvre saisissante qui fit scandale lors de sa présentation au Salon de 1834 !

Ce groupe en marbre a été réalisé par James Pradier, nous y voyons un satyre et une bacchante, deux personnages mythologiques appartenant au cortège de Bacchus, le dieu du vin. La bacchante est renversée contre le satyre, reconnaissable à ses pattes de bouc, dans une étreinte langoureuse sans que l’on sache si elle le repousse ou l’attire.
Cette oeuvre monumentale provoqua un choc éthique et esthétique. Bien que le sujet mythologique choisi soit néo-classique, la force brutale et sensuelle qui se dégage de cette sculpture appartient déjà au Romantisme.

This marble group was made by James Pradier; we can see a satyr and a bacchante, two mythological characters belonging to the procession of Bacchus, also known as Dionysus. The bacchante is falling backwards against the satyr, recognizable by its goat's feet, in a languorous embrace without us knowing whether she pushes him away or attracts him.
This monumental work provoked an ethical and aesthetic shock. Although the mythological subject chosen is neo-classical, the brutal and sensual force that emerges from this sculpture already belongs to Romanticism.
