This true tomato frog was photographed at @theomahazoo and definitely looks like a plump, grumpy tomato. But if you happened to be one of its natural predators (snakes) you would be disappointed by the taste. Its colorful body acts as a warning sign, telling others “I’m poisonous, so back off”. If that doesn’t work, the next step is to inflate their bodies and appear much larger than normal. If this still isn't enough, the skin of the true tomato frog secretes a white substance acting like a toxic glue. These frogs are only found on the island of Madagascar and for many years was listed as 'Near Threatened' due to polluted bodies of water and collection for international trade. Since they are adaptable and able to live in disturbed habitats they have a real shot at long-term survival in the wild.
