On Miyake-jima Island, one of the Tokyo islands, you can enjoy diverse volcanic landscapes formed from volcanic eruptions that have occurred over and over since long ago.
During the eruption in 1983, violent steam explosions occurred in the south part of the island, and large amounts of lava and volcanic ash were expelled. Nippana Shinzan is a mountain formed by scoria (a volcanic rock) that landed there from a sea floor eruption at that time. It is a famous spot known as "the mountain that formed in one night".
The red layers are due to the oxidization of iron in the magma.
