Known as "Noyaki", from March through mid April each year, the withered winter grassland of Aso is burnt off to exterminate pests and encourage growth of a new lush green grassland. Noyaki is a traditional event that signals the coming of spring to Aso.
After Noyaki, new greens will sprout from the pitch-black surface of Aso-Kuju National Park, exhibiting a beautiful grassland in May.
