Whether you’re celebrating May Day with flowers and May Poles, or protest signs and parades—the day has roots in late 1800s America when people from around the world were flocking to U.S. cities to find jobs in the nation's booming industries. ?? Some of America’s social elite worried that these workers would only partake in “cheap amusements,” and revived May Day as a form of wholesome play.? At the same time, the nation’s labor leaders were trying to define May 1 as holiday for the American worker. May 1 became a day when workers would strike, demanding better labor conditions, or celebrate when their demands were met.✊ What does May Day mean to you? Do you do anything to celebrate?
