Violent, atmospheric seascapes were one of Turner’s most prolific subjects. Here the raging sea claims a shipwreck while passengers escape on lifeboats through the white spray, towards the danger of another jagged rock. When this piece was exhibited in 1823, Turner was praised for ‘the chaotic & destructive character’ of this work.
