In 1819, J M W Turner travelled to Italy, arriving in Rome in late October. He filled over 12 sketchbooks while he was there, making studies of the ancient city in his lodgings during the evenings. He created compositional studies suggesting colour, atmosphere and mood, and returned home to complete works based on his journey.
