Image by @Joel Sartore | This mandrill named Ebenezer at @gladysporterzoo was born on Christmas Day, 1988. He has sired 5 offspring at the Zoo and, according to his keepers, is very tolerant of his boisterous family. When he’s had enough of their antics he will display a big wide grin/grimace, and they’ll give him a break. Males of this species have vibrant, mask-like faces and colorful rear ends, which make it easier for their troop to follow them as they travel through the dense vegetation of the Congo Basin. One of the largest of these groups ever recorded consisted of approximately 1,200 individuals!
Mandrills communicate with various facial expressions and vocalizations. They will bare their teeth with canine fangs that can be up to 2 inches (5 cm) long, and shake their heads. This may look like a threat, but it's often completely friendly. They also make grunts and an eerie, human-like scream that is used to stay in touch with each other.
Mandrills are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Their main threats are human encroachment on their habitat for illegal logging, and hunting for bushmeat. The Gladys Porter Zoo participates with the SSP, breeding mandrills, keeping the captive population genetically diverse, and promoting awareness of the plight of this vanishing creature.
