Photo by @amivitale. ‪The passing of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, was really hard on all of his keepers. They’d fallen in love with him. They say they wake up in the morning and see the rhinos often before they see their own children. They say, ‘These are our babies.’‬ These keepers are the real heroes, the men and women protecting all of these species. They are the ones, often with very little, making huge impacts in their communities and the planet. We can often forget that the best protectors of these landscapes are the local communities themselves. Their efforts to preserve community cohesion is ultimately the best immunization against forces that threaten both their wildlife and way of life.
