‘Leonora Carrington grew up in Lancashire not too far from @tateliverpool and we mounted a major exhibition of this wonderful artist in 2015. I knew of her before then, but had not seen anything like her amazing paintings and constructions (including a magical cradle), nor knew enough about her unbelievable life (I highly recommend The Surreal Life of Leonora Carrington by Joanna Moorhead). To meet her family and see her work in depth was inspiring; I am a big fan of myths and fairy tales and there is so much to think about in her work. Female surrealists are underrated and Leonora is one of the best. This drawing in the Tate Collection is not as colourfully arresting as the paintings (it is thought to have been completed shortly after her mental collapse) but it is amazingly powerful.
