It starts here in these mountains... the expression actually originally comes from the Persian words “Bam-i Dunya” and it was used for the first time in history by the people of the Pamir mountains to describe their region (presumably in the local Wakhi language). Much later, it was borrowed to describe either the Himalayan region, Tibet or the summit of Everest. Interesting to note that the Pamir region has high altitude plateaus, and that houses from this part of the world have... flat roofs.
