Galle was known as Gimhathiththa before it was colonized in the 16th century by Portuguese and became the primary port of the island. The city played an important role long before the it’s colonization and according to James Emerson Tennent was the ancient seaport of Tarshish. It was ‘discovered’ by the Portuguese in 1502 when a fleet was blown off course en route to the Maldives. Galle has played many roles throughout its history, most recently as a major tourist destination that highlights the Fort of Galle. For better or worse, the city’s function is and always has been built on the back backs of laborers like Soma Wera.
