Today we’re tipping our cap to David Bustill Bowser, the artist who painted these hats.
Bowser—an African American man living in Philadelphia in the 1800s—made a living painting banners, uniform hats, equipment, signs, and more for different organizations including volunteer firefighters. Firefighters wore hats like these, especially at special events like parades. ?
