Mixers used by early hip-hop DJs were often inexpensive or even self-built. Innovators like Grandmaster Flash (Joseph Saddler) combined their technical skills and musical talent in order to reinvent the machinery of American music. During his career, Flash turned microphone mixers into turntable mixers; later, he helped produce mixers like this one—an Empath audio mixer specifically designed for the needs of DJs. Grandmaster Flash (Joseph Saddler), was born in Barbados in 1958. Growing up in the Bronx, he was influenced by his father’s massive record collection. As a teenager, Flash first experimented with DJ equipment and became involved in the New York DJ scene while attending daytime technical school courses in electronics. Inspired the techniques of Kool DJ Herc and others, he began building his own musical equipment from spare parts. The innovations and techniques developed by Grandmaster Flash established him as one of the pioneers of hip-hop. In the early 2000s, Flash advised the Rane Corporation, a leading manufacturer of DJ equipment, on the design of the Empath audio mixer. This particular mixer—a Grandmaster Flash Gold Signature edition—was donated to the museum by Grandmaster Flash.
