This beautiful shot of the north side of Mt. Bandai was taken from Lake Hibara, in the village of Kitashiobara. Lake Hibara is a dammed lake, created by volcanic activity from Mt. Bandai in the Meiji Period. When the lake freezes over in winter, many people visit to enjoy ice fishing for Japanese pond smelt (Hypomesus nipponensis, or ‘wakasagi’). On rare occasions, visitors can also see ‘diamond dust,’ glimmering ice that dances on the breeze.
