One of the most popular activities in Kushiro Shitsugen National Park is canoeing down the Kushiro River. The park offers tours lead by seasoned guides, so even in winter visitors can enjoy a pleasant journey downstream — which is great, because winter just might be the best time to visit! In the chill of early morning, a gentle mist hangs over the water. Combined with the area’s majestic fauna, which includes the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla, or ‘ojirowashi’) and the endangered red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis, or ‘tancho’), the gorgeous scenery is sure to leave a lasting impression.
