Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in 1818, but the exact date is unknown—which was not uncommon for those enslaved, as their birth dates were rarely recorded. Douglass chose to celebrate his birthday on Feb. 14.
Two hundred years after his birth, we’re commemorating his legacy as a writer, orator, abolitionist and advocate for equal rights.
Douglass was also the most photographed American of the 19th century. This ambrotype (image on glass) is in the collection of our @nmaahc.
