Video sequence by @simonnorfolkstudio End of the Soviet-Afghan War. On this day (15 February) in 1989 Soviet troops fully withdrew from Afghanistan after 9 years of bloody conflict… Here from my 'Time Taken' project, a sequence of images from Afghanistan's Central Highlands, transitioning through the seasons and depicting two abandoned Soviet tanks in a field. Walking the fields and streets here can be like passing through a Museum of the Archaeology of War - different moments of destruction resting like sediment on top of one another. The cyclical nature of the images speak of both the constant presence of war in Afghanistan, but also of a perseverance and hope as the land continues to be ploughed and planted. The main creation of Afghan culture is arguably the landscape itself, worked and fashioned over the depth of time, but one has to stop, sit quietly and actually take time, to see it in action.
