Photo by @ronan_donovan // How do elephants show affection? Well, it’s the same way that we do - with physical contact. All social mammals, from canines to elephants, use physical touch as a way to signify happiness, reassurance, and also discontent. Affectionate physical contact, like what these 3 elephants are engaged in, releases the hormone oxytocin - or the ‘cuddle hormone.’ Evolution has programed social mammals to feel good when they show physical affection or reassurance. Why? Well the simple answer is that social mammals thrive when every member of the group is healthy and happy. Physical contact increases relationship bonds among group members, which will be called upon during stressful or life-threatening situations. Think of a wolf pack that engages in daily group snuggles in order to later work as a group to take town prey that can weigh 10 times their body weight. So basically, if you take anything away from this post, it’s that snuggling is good for your health! Snuggle more.
