Pictured here, an Italian explorer descends into a moulin (a cave in the ice) on the Aletsch glacier in Switzerland. Late in the evening when the temperature is much colder and prevents meltwater cascading down inside the cave, this explorer rappels into another world inside the ice. A world that can help glaciologists better understand how and why these beautiful glaciers melt.
