A wild #elephant herd passes through an area called #Loijuk south east of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), Africa's first community owned and operated elephant sanctuary. This is one of the herds the elephants @r.e.s.c.u.e cares for might be able to join once they are strong enough to return to the wild. One of the great benefits @r.e.s.c.u.e offers is that now these elephant calves are raised near where they were rescued and they might someday even be able to return to the same herds they were originally separated from.
What’s happening at @r.e.s.c.u.e, without fanfare, is nothing less than the beginnings of a transformation in the way Samburus relate to wild animals they once feared. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about the people as it is about elephants.
