“As we neared the base of our day’s objective, we found a spot on the glacier to cache our gear that we didn’t need before we set off into the vertical. A beautiful morning quickly turned to a lightning storm with 60 mph winds. We were exposed on the granite ridges but were able to safely take cover and wait out the storm. Shortly after the storm, a rockfall came tumbling down from high above. A microwave-size block was coming right for us, but luckily it struck an overhang six feet above and exploded. With the biggest chunks of rock deflected away, we were peppered with golf-ball-sized shrapnel. Everyone was a little bit shaken up, but safe.
