This majestic quetzal bird came from @smithsoniannmnh in 1956 to join our collection—our monetary collection, called our National Numismatic Collection. But why would a bird be found among the coins? ?? The quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala. The indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica used feathers from quetzal birds as currency. Quetzals featured prominently in Mayan mythology and symbolized wealth. In 1925 Guatemala changed its national currency from the peso to the quetzal, and the new quetzal banknotes feature an image of the bird on each note.
Fred isn’t the only oddball (odd bird?) in the National Numismatic Collection. It’s also home to our oyster money. Yes, clams! Click the link in our profile to check it out.
