Pop quiz, history fans! Can you identify this face from history? This is a plaster cast of the death mask of a very influential man in international history. In his day, it was a common practice to make a death mask of notable figures who passed away. Hints: He wasn't born in America. He accomplished a lot at a young age. He also had a notable brother. Want extra credit? Tell us which of our departments this object is part of: a) Medicine and Science, b) Armed Forces History, c) Numismatic Collection, d) Work and Industry. ????? UPDATE: Napoleon is the correct answer. ✅ Good work, folks! Napoleon died in 1821 in exile on the British island of Saint Helena. At the time of death, Napoleon's physician, François Carlo Antommarchi, cast one mask. He later produced copies, like this one made in 1833. But what about the extra credit question? This object is NOT in our Armed Forces History Collection, as many guessed! It’s in our National Numismatic Collection. But why is it in the numismatic collection with coins and money? There is a small medal embedded at the base of the neck with a portrait of Napoleon wearing a laurel wreath, the name of the physician, and the date.
