In 1981 I made my first trip to Peru to do a country story for National Geographic magazine. It was and remains perhaps my greatest visual stimulus upon seeing the incredible color palette and imagery that abounded no matter where I seemed to find myself in my wanderings. I made a lot of mistakes but I also made a lot of fine images during my months of working in Peru. In this rather simple picture a woman is standing, slightly bent over stacks of dried and salted fish. The picture is so simple but also so complete and yet asks a question: what is this, where and why? Sometimes a picture is striking because it seems to ask a question and there isn’t always an answer. So we remember it. The essay appeared as “The Two Souls of Peru,” in the March, 1982 issue.
