1. As the strong rays of summer are replaced by the soft illumination of autumn, red spider lilies (Lycoris radiata, or ‘higanbana’) color the landscape of Shirotori-Matsubara Park in Higashikagawa City, Kagawa Prefecture. Famed in Japan for blooming during the autumnal equinox, these charming flowers are known by many names, including cluster amaryllis in English and ‘manjushage’ in Japanese.

2. Quietly concealed in a grassy field in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, we spot an Oedaleus infernalis (‘kurumabatta modoki’). Smaller than Gastrimargus marmoratus (‘kurumabatta’), hardy Oedaleus infernalis can be found thriving even in residential vacant lots where other grasshopper species no longer live.
