The southern tip of the Izu Peninsula offers some surprising rock formations!

1. You won’t find any pointy rocks here—they’re all flat! Looking like a thousand ‘tatami’ mats spread out across the surface of the earth, this spot is called Senjojiki: literally, ‘Spread of One Thousand Tatami Mats.' It’s said that countless years of wave action have eroded the shore into its current formation.

2. While the scene may call to mind images of ancient ruins, this is no such thing. The flat rock formations at Iruma Senjojiki made for convenient building materials, and they were once used far and wide as ‘Izu-ishi,’ or ‘Izu stone.’ Telltale signs of cut-away rock can still be seen here and there, making this not only a site to enjoy the grandiosity of nature, but also the culture and history of ancient days.
