[swipe ??] During the Meiji Era, the long established Japanese sake known as doburoku was outlawed by the national government. In the early 2000’s, Sachio Egawa, resident and farmer of Tono, Iwate Province, undertook the responsibility to revive the beverage’s culture and incorporate it in modern traditions. After then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi granted the city of Tono an exemption to produce doburoku in 2004, Egawa underwent a self-teaching of the once lost doburoku making process, and today produces and vends three different types of the alcoholic drink.
