#ThrowbackThursday to the first time our Freer Gallery of Art opened in 1923, when live peacocks roamed the courtyard.
The birds resembled the décor of James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room, a highlight of the new gallery.
Donated by the National Zoo, the peacocks remained fixtures in the Freer courtyard in the 1920s, which is when this @smithsonianarchives photos were taken.
We're gearing up for @freersackler's reopening Oct. 14, which includes a weekend festival of Asian art, food and culture. See a preview at #IlluminAsiaFS. #tbt
