Architect James Renwick, Jr. designed our Castle, the first Smithsonian building. When it was finished in 1855, it was the only building on the National Mall.
The Castle’s appearance was meant to imitate British institutions of higher learning and culture (think Oxford and Cambridge). It’s designed in a combination of late Romanesque and early Gothic motifs from the 12th century, showing that Americans—and their new Smithsonian—could have culture too.

Renwick is also the architect behind St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City and our Renwick Gallery.
