Rohingya refugees arrived by boat at night on the beach of Shahparir island after they crossed the Naf river to flee Myanmar.
In the past 5 weeks, about 500,000 Rohingya Muslims, an ethnic minority group, have fled their homes in Myanmar in what the United Nations human rights chief has called “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.”
The conflict erupted on Aug. 25, after a Rohingya militant group attacked army security posts in the country’s west coast state of Rakhine.
The rohingya stateless minority, often described as one of the most persecuted in the world, have been facing discrimination in Myanmar for decades.
