Muḥarram is the first month of the Islamic calendar year. Muharram also marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala when the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad was killed, and is an event of mourning for Shia Muslims. Here we have a photograph of a mourning procession in Bangladesh compared to a vibrant painting of Muharram from the 19th century.
