Why the third wheel? To help cyclists go over bumps smoothly with minimal jostling to the rider. A perfect object for hump day, isn't it? This bicycle was made by the Rex Cycle Company of Chicago in 1898. It was designed by Bohn C. Hicks, who obtained three patents on this type of machine in 1896.
The seat was mounted on a tube attached to pivot points on the front wheel and the rear third wheel, a design to allow the wheels to undulate over obstructions with minimal jostling to the rider.

We hope you have a smooth #HumpDay, history fans! Friday will be here soon.
