Eleanor Jones wore this uniform during World War I. She served as a “reconstruction aid,” a physical therapy assistant, at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, and Fort Sam Houston near San Antonio, Texas. She also served nearby the museum at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C. The light blue chambray uniform of the reconstruction aides earned them the affectionate nickname of “bluebirds.” Short sleeves indicated a physical therapy assistant; occupational therapy assistants wore long sleeves.
World War I was the first conflict in which the U.S. Army offered a coordinated physical and occupational therapy program. At the beginning of the war, the U.S. government was still paying benefits to 650,000 Civil War veterans and widows.
