Morbid back-to-school reading, courtesy of this 1811 New England Primer printed in Massachusetts. The text, designed to be read by children, says, "Life and the Grave two different lessons give / Life shows us how to die, death how to live." The second image shown here is from an 1808 New England Primer printed in Wilmington, Delaware. In its "Verses for Young Children," the primer states, "Though I am young, a little one, / If I can speak and go alone, / Then I must learn to know the Lord." Heavy stuff for little kids!
