Resistance

So what’s with the facemask that appears on our #Resistance collection? The facemask might all too easily be associated with violent protests, and as a defence against tear gas or pepper spray. Here we present it in another context. For those that resist, there is the argument that they should be prepared to show their faces, standing up for what they believe. However, in some societies and with some causes, it is simply too dangerous to reveal your identity. The mass of cameras- whether they be surveillance monitors or just smart phones, means that the image of anyone protesting their basic rights can be in the public feed within seconds. Very often the protestors are vulnerable and revealing their identity will bring them into the direct view of the forces that oppose them.

There is also another reason to wear the mask. With a lack of faith in the usual methods and channels of democracy, the mask brings a new dimension. The benefits of anonymity are ceaseless. Through one, universal and undistinguished face can better represent the idea of collective action and equality. It reflects that we are all acting together- and that gender, race and age are blurred to be irrelevant.
