Subcultures ‘make symbolic challenges to a symbolic order’. - Dick Hebdige, Subculture and the Meaning of Style (1978). It has since been argued that subculture has lost its ‘subversive and challenging power’ as it has increasingly become situated back within the dominant framework of meanings- i.e. the mainstream. We believe that underground culture remains a virulent and resistant force: always brave, always innovative, always resourceful. We want to make Underground synonymous with that.

The relationship between Underground- the brand- and underground culture more generally, is symbiotic. Underground’s success is intrinsically linked to its status in the underground. And we value this status above everything else.
