PART 3

When I saw the work in person, truly all types of thoughts and feelings rushed through me, fundamentally shaking the structure of this exhibition I had envisioned before seeing the work. I had assumed the true identity of the monstrous nature of the Japanese Bubble Economy to be precisely the giant baby in the manga Akira, the awakened form of the character Tesuo; something uncontrollable and ever-expanding. Yet Hibino’s work in person revealed a landscape that is utterly modest, human-scale, and truly honest.

As you can see, even just looking at Hibino’s work alone, the narrative that emerges is epic; its scale is such that it can’t be captured in a short essay. This is why I haven’t been able to compose an effective introduction for this exhibition. We were therefore unable to announce and advertise the show in advance.
I intend to continue discussing this exhibition in a few installments to come, but first thing first, please come see this show that recognizes Katsuhiko Hibino’s debut work as the first successor to Mono-ha in the context of contemporary art.
