Here's a birds eye view of the Iquitos várzea, a type of flooded forest in the Peruvian amazon. This was shot by me @stevewinterphoto and my assistant @alexbraczkowski near Iquitos, the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon east of the Andes. I am here documenting jaguars and how indigenous people use jaguars in culture and medicine as part of my worldwide @ナショナルジオグラフィック magazine story on the species which comes out in December 2017!
This particular patch of rainforest near Iquitos, Peru has nearly 900 species of flora and over 130 mammals, 330 different birds and 150 amphibians and reptiles living in it! Nearly half a million people also live and depend on this rainforest and its river for food, water and tourism. This area has some of the most fertile soil in the world thanks to the sediments washed down from the Andes. We need to protect these forest systems which are the lungs of the earth!
